FRIDAY's FAVE FIVE

The whole week  the sun has been acting like Trump, sometimes in a bad mood, sometimes in a good mood, sometimes yes, sometimes no – constantly changing its mind. No walks for me; the only thing I did was buy food for cat Rosie. She doesn't care about the weather, but her stomach does.

The days are usually  so similar, but this week we have gotten a bit out of rhythm. The rooms on the renovated 3rd floor have been occupied by people on the ground floor, which is being converted into offices, a gym, and space for the nurses and palliative care staff.

My friend Jeanine is now living right next to mine in the room where the wine-loving Geneviève used to live, so I don't have to pop any more champagne corks at 9 am. I will miss her, but see her during our activities. She has shown me her room which is half of what she had before, but not small at all, is cozy, nicely furnished completed with her furniture and has a beautiful view out on the park.

So I often find residents who had forgotten their floor or, no longer knew their new room number, and wandered around the long castle corridors like ghosts.

I retired in my cozy room and spent time with Rosie, or I went to Jeanine and we chatted at bit, outside they were transporting furniture and sometimes it was quite noisy.

One resident died at 101 and it is a real relieve for him, as he hardly could eat and then nothing anymore he lay the whole day in bed and stared at the ceiling. His wife was very happy that he was gone and didn't hide her joy, she told me that he was the worst womanizer in the world and had cheated on her with black girls in the Congo when it was still a colony of Belgium. She didn't have a happy life and was trapped as she had no money to divorce.

Yesterday during our activity I had a view on Jean, a man who suffers Alzheimer and nobody knows why he is sitting the whole day in the restaurant. I saw him sucking on something, but didn't know what it was, and then suddenly I realized that he had the salt shaker in his mouth, and the salt too! I called Kim, who took the salt shaker away and gave him a glass of water to rinse his mouth.

The next morning I went to the responsible nurse and told her what happened. She thanked me and now he probably has to move to the 4th floor. It is too dangerous to leave him with our normal group. One nearly killed him, she gave him a cookie which he can't eat it would get stuck in his throat. He is only allowed to eat mashed or liquid food.

Jeanine is nearly settled in her new room and it looks real nice. I took a picture out of the 3 windows she has and saw Francine again pulling out weeds. She does it the whole day from morning till evening and always bent. It's a miracle that she walks as straight as an I.
